Re: Wanting a new phone, suggestions?

Read this thread with great anticipation... but afraid I disagree with quite a few of you.

First off, I still rate Nokia as a good quality, no frills no fuss device... yes the OS is outdated but the device itself is rock solid - I am eagerly waiting to see what happens with the new Windows Mobile Devices. (I capitalized these word for a reason - W M D)

Secondly, although I believe the Android OS is the way of the future I still believe it has a long way to go before it is properly integrated with the mobile device industry. At present I question the OS design and think there are to many "frills" (for lack of a better word) that over complicate the use of the device.
Don't get me wrong I love spending hours at end trying to find the little settings which consume my data but for the average user this is a unnecessary inconvenience.

Thirdly, I was deadset against getting any BlackBerry, but alas I was forced by my employer to use a BB Curve 8250 and subsequently to upgrade to the BB Curve 9300... I was pleasantly surpriced by the fact that everything just worked... granted we run BB Servers at work but that being said as a business tool I cannot fault the BB's... I will however admit that little flashing red light has a nasty habit of messing with my marriage... You see I am obsessive compulsive and when I see it flashing I HAVE TO know who was looking for me... :P

Something which I notices which has not been discussed here is the Apple products?
No sure if this is a sign of lack of support or just a little oversight but thought I would put that out there as well...

IN summary, I agree with Oj0 here, Nokia is a simple, user friendly device that does everything you want it to without breaking the bank or costing you hours to setup according to your own personal preferences.

    Cheers

I'm completely against BlackBerry as I don't like the idea of being a slave. So often I see friends pull over to the side of the road to read a message, or when in the front passanger seat I get asked to hold the steering wheel as they use both hands to reply to a message. No bloody thank you.

True... But it is human habit and not bbs fault..its the way mankind has evolved. Everyday we are becoming more and more dependant on tecnology. Just yersterday i was telling damin how i was busy updating my tv's firmware...a tv!

    Skynet here we come...

Anyway, back to the subject. Buying a phone is like buying cloths... Its a personal preference and depends what you wanna use it for.

Someone was selling an HTC Desire Z for R1700 (GumTree).

That should be a nice compromise, but slightly over your budget.

Those keyboards are pretty uncomfortable if you plan on doing one-handed typing, which is likely if you're on the move.

I've found swype useful for typing when things are shaking. Since you don't lift your finger (often), the grip is better, and you don't accidentally press the screen (often).
I still suck at typing left-handed with it though.

Had this same conversation a few weeks back with a friend. It ended with her getting a HTC Cha-Cha. Has a qwerty keyboard and touch screen, runs android 2.2.3 ginger sandwich or whatever. A its a nice and quick with everything you need in a smart phone.

    Specs : www.gsmarena.com/htc_chacha-3787.php

She took the phone out on contract and I'm not sure on the cash price. But when googling "htc cha cha cash price cape town" It came up with quite a few gumtree ads advertising @ R1600 all brand new sealed in the box.
