I want to get Sennheiser 598s to use with the PC straight from the motherboard. I get the idea that it might be a waste of an expensive headphone... maybe a DAC will let it perform to its full potential?

Edit: have a look at what people buy along with the HD 598s on amazon. everyone seems to buy that "FiiO E7 USB DAC and Portable Headphone Amplifier (Black)" and the Iphone adapter with it.
Yeah it was an option but this does a lot more and some less for the same price. I didn't need the battery power or the lcd. I opted for the 192kHz support instead.

You should at least get some dac. Not just an amp. The Asus Xonar series should be good. But you're welcome to come try the Musiland when I have it!

Well so far I would say no, not a big difference. But I won't rule out that I'm the idiot in the loop. But a bigger difference was getting the headphones in the first place. So I'd say if you already have great sound equipment then stay put :-D

I think I will try write a Linux driver for musiland, should be a nice serious project with lots to learn on the way!

Ok I sold that Musiland Monitor 01 that I got. Nothing wrong with it, I was just getting tired of the driver requirement and had no mood to write a better driver. Changing volume using mouse, not cool!
