is this monitor better than the samsung P2770H?

Definitely, I actually owned a P2770H before upgrading this monitor. The Samsung screens have a tendency to have slight backlight bleed and although the Philips does have a slightly lighter section at the bottom of the screen, it is much better than any of the Samsung screens I've owned in the past. The brightness is also better (more uniform) than the P2770H, so it appears to have better colour reproduction when compared side by side
